Meet the team: Dhara Kothari

wizNext up, we have a D-Link veteran in the form of Dhara Kothari, D-Link UK and Ireland’s Marketing Manager who has been with the company for over 4 years. Below we get a very rare snapshot into what it takes to run arguably the most integrated department.

Be sure to stay posted as we get to know the rest of the links that make up D-Link!

Tell us a little bit about your role at D-Link and what your day to day responsibilities look like?

I’m the Marketing Manager for the UK and Ireland so my itinerary can range from devising the annual marketing strategy, designing collateral to being on the road, attending events and visiting customers.

What is your proudest – none work/academic related- achievement?

At the beginning of 2017 I embarked on a complete lifestyle change focusing on fitness and health, which resulted in me running 5K for charity. I am going to further this in 2018 by running 10K!

If you were a chocolate bar which one would you be and why?

A Crunchie! Sweet on the inside, hard on the outside.

If you could create a new technological device that could do anything what would it be and why?

It would be a watch where you can pre-set your mood for the day. I tend to let my passion take over sometimes but I’m sure my co-workers would appreciate if I could tap my watch and be happy 24/7!

What would be the soundtrack to your life?

SexyBack – Justin Timberlake.  (Did I actually just say that?)

If you had to trade places/ positions with someone in the office for a day who would it be and why?

Paul Routledge, our UK Country Manager, because I have always said I don’t envy his role but I am intrigued at the same time. Having said that- I think a day would be enough. Curiosity killed the cat and all.

Where is your favourite place in the world to visit?

My favourite city is New York. However, top of the bucket list is visiting the original 7 wonders of the world.

Do you have any hobbies?

I’m a complete novice but, Photography. Capturing those Kodak moments. I absolutely love travelling and exploring new places which, for me, goes hand in hand with photography as I can look at a picture and go back to the exact moment it was taken.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?

I don’t believe in having any regrets so I’d tell me to do exactly the same, maybe with a bit more Gin!

Tell us an interesting fact/ joke/ your favourite quote/poem

Everything happens for a reason.

Meet the team: Paul Routledge

paulThe first in our new blog series, we introduce you to the UK and Ireland Country Manager – Paul Routledge. He gives us an all access pass into his favourite past-times, work and family life.

Be sure to stay posted as we get to know the rest of the links that make up D-Link!

Tell us a little bit about your role at D-Link and what your day to day responsibilities look like?

I have been at D-Link for nearly seven years now, which is longer than some governments hang on to power!. My main responsibility is leading a team of professionals to develop the business in the UK and Ireland. This covers both consumer and business channels so, as you can imagine, this role comes with a wide range of responsibilities. On the consumer side we work with customers like Amazon and Ebuyer to supply consumer technology including smart home solutions. On the business side, we work with established System Integrators who integrate our enterprise solutions including Wave 2 WiFi, Fully Managed 52 port switches with Power over Ethernet and IP Surveillance Surveillance range.

Aside from customer facing activities I am privileged to lead the UKI team and focus on developing this talented team of individuals to create a sustainable and profitable business.

What is your proudest – none work/academic related- achievement?

Without a doubt the proudest moment of my life is that Jenny, my wife, actually agreed to marry me and have kids with me. I’m still amazed now. It amazes me every day.

If you were a chocolate bar which one would you be and why?

A bounty. For a few reasons, firstly, like myself, it’s no nonsense. It’s exactly as you’d expect when you see the wrapper. It’s not too sweet but is full of energy. Finally, it comes as two separate bars so you can have some now and some later when you need it. I identify with that as it’s very practical!

If you could create a new technological device that could do anything what would it be and why?

A teleportation device so I could wake up at home, have breakfast with the family and then beam to work and back again. I commute from Yorkshire to London so it would save me a lot of time and frustrations stuck on the M1 or on delayed trains.

What would be the soundtrack to your life?

I think it’s hard to pin point one soundtrack as I think it changes as you go through life. At the moment, for example, Dominic the Donkey, mixed with the Minecraft theme tune and the sound of my youngest asking me what my favourite super hero is comes to mind. A sort of remix if you like. In all seriousness, when I need to get my head in the game I usually listen to an album called Nightbook by Ludovico Einaudi, so if I had to pick it would be that.

If you had to trade places/ positions with someone in the office for a day who would it be and why?

It would be our Technical Sales specialist, Sam who we are training to be a technical Account Manager. Part of his time is spent selling but he is also very hands of with the technology. He is also at a point in his career where everything is new and exciting.

Where is your favourite place in the world to visit?

In general, I just like being outside, from being in the mountains to being on the moors near home or even on the islands in Scotland. Anywhere that has a lot of space really.

Do you have any hobbies?

I like to keep fit, running, walking, cycling. I’m not passionate about any particular sport but like I said I just enjoy being outside and to keep myself fit so I can spend as much time with my family as possible.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?

Chill out, enjoy life, it will be right! Mainly, it will be right. That has been a phrase I’ve held on to throughout my life. Even when the kids arrived as these little ‘things’ that we were so scared of, it was always the voice in the back of my mind that kept me going. And I was true – it is right and they are brilliant.

How Can D-Link’s Smart Home Make Your Life Easier?

As a new contender to the market, the uptake on Smart Home devices is growing daily. Adopting this new technology allows you to choose new devices that give you significantly more control over how your home operates, increasing home security, safety and functionality, as well as saving you money due to decreased energy consumption and ease of general upkeep.

Furthermore, through the application of smart products, you can enjoy more control over your home’s functions from anywhere in the world, via your mobile device. Do you leave the house wondering whether you left your iron on? Did you remember to turn off your hair straighteners before you left? Did the children leave the lights on? Did you remember to close the back door on that balmy summer evening? Nowadays, you have no need to worry as you can swiftly power off various connected appliances in seconds, thanks to a smart home app on your mobile device.

With these advantages in mind, we thought we would highlight some benefits that you can take advantage of with our range of smart home products, which deliver new ways to gain more control of the new functions available for your automated home. To enjoy these, we’ve collaborated with the likes of Amazon’s Alexa range and If This Then That (IFTTT). Essentially, IFTTT is the language of the Smart Home, allowing you to build your own device ‘recipes’ to create interactions around the home. You can pair a range of our mydlink Home devices with other IFTTT enabled products and apps to do a wide range of really useful things around your home.

One truly exciting Connected Home enhancement we have made in recent times is the compatibility between our popular Wi-Fi smart plugs and Amazon’s Echo/Dot. This compatibility gives you an intuitive way to control your home simply using the sound of your voice. Plus, thanks to our compatibility with IFTTT, even if you don’t own an intelligent personal assistant, you have no need to worry; you can still set the lights to turn off automatically when you leave the house, or have the coffee maker turn on and make you freshly brewed coffee as the sun rises using your mobile.

Other significant advances have been made in security. With D-Link’s door and window sensors you will be alerted if you’ve left a window or door open. Installed alarms are also becoming a thing of the past now that motion detectors and a multitude of home security cameras can be linked and controlled from wherever you and your smart phone may be. In fact, security of your home no longer needs to be a worry and one quick and easy way to get up and running is with the Smart Home Security Kit. This clever bundle allows you to monitor your home from anywhere in the world, safe in the knowledge that your treasured belongings are being protected. Comprising a connected home hub, a door and window sensor, a siren and a monitor – all managed by the mydlink Home smartphone and tablet app – the kit provides fantastic peace of mind; it’s not just smart home technology, but smarter and now more secure home technology.

There’s really are no end of commands that can be actioned to ensure you make the most out of your D-Link Smart Home products, to make your life that little bit easier, more secure and much more reassuring.

A Smart Investment – the opportunities on offer for re sellers looking to adopt smart technology

the-takeover-is-here-the-rise-of-smart-technology-93063

As predicted by analysts, the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart technology are now becoming more prevalent in our everyday lives. Simply put, the IoT is the concept of being able to connect any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). It’s essentially a giant network of connected devices, and the IoT is set to take the channel by storm as it allows for endless opportunities and connections to take place.

In the UK alone for instance, the use of IoT services are already prevalent, as seen in the energy sector and the rollout across the UK of British Gas’s Hive Heating. Smart heating alone has opened up opportunities for electrical installers and plumbers and allowed them to expand their business and service offering.

Web tools such as ‘If This Then That’ (IFTTT) have also been created to meet the growth in connected devices. Put simply, IFTTT automates everything from apps to websites to app-enabled accessories to smart devices. At D-Link we collaborated early with IFTTT, as interoperability is ultimately the future of smart technology. Whether it’s our televisions, phones or the technology in our homes, smart technology and IoT are terms that many people will now have come across.

While it’s often associated with consumer technology, the IoT is a lot more than just smart homes and connected appliances. Devices are now creeping into most businesses, in the same way in which computers and the Internet did twenty years ago.

As a result, businesses are beginning to benefit greatly from smart technology, and are aware they need to keep pace with the speed of innovation in order to ensure employees have the latest tools – from access to mobile productivity apps, to wearable technology. In this respect, the physical workspace is evolving.

With affordable and accessible IP solutions that can be monitored from smartphones and tablets, voice control technology such as Amazon’s Alexa, motion sensors that can trigger alerts to the user’s phone, and energy saving with the use of smart plugs to control electrical devices, small to medium sized business owners now have a wealth of different solutions available to them.

Many smart products can now also be applied and used as entry-level security solutions for small to medium sized businesses that don’t necessarily have a wealth of resources to invest in protecting their business. In fact, just purely installing surveillance devices contributes to safety and acts as a valuable deterrent, enabling home and business owners to protect what’s important to them. Unlike traditional security systems, smart products are an entirely scalable solution that can be operated at any level, with the ability to add as many cameras or sensors that are required. With no installation costs and no monthly fees, smart home security is a very attractive prospect for small to medium sized businesses that do not want to invest in more expensive, professional solutions.

With this in mind, the opportunity smart technology presents for B2B and B2C resellers is vast and it’s an area that is only going to witness further growth as new technologies are brought to the fray. For resellers looking to offer smart technologies and solutions now is as good a time as any to get on board and reap the rewards from such an excellent opportunity.

First and foremost, resellers that want to sell smart solutions should look to educate users, whether this is via content, displays, social media etc. as the huge breadth of products on offer from a number of vendors can often be overwhelming for potential customers. Physical displays can be incredibly effective in order to showcase smart home solutions, allowing people to have hands on experience with the technology. They can also be used as a mechanism to educate and inform consumers about smart technology and its benefits.

It’s also important to demonstrate the way in which smart products interact with each other in order to create a fully automated environment. Many people aren’t aware that, for instance, a camera could be set up to detect motion and subsequently trigger a light via a smart plug, all set up via the user.

Ultimately the increasing importance of smart technology in people’s lives is a trend that we will see continuing this year. Following the launch of widely adopted products such as Amazon Echo and the collaboration this had led to with multiple vendors, including D-Link, smart technology is now starting to gain significant mind-share amongst the public. This means that customers are ready for the technology, making it a must have offering for resellers in 2017.

D-Link’s 30th Birthday – Looking to the Future of Smart Home Technology

same-birthdays

In the second of our series of blog posts leading up to our 30th Birthday we’re going to take a look at our entry into the smart home market and take a look at D-Link’s vision going forward. Ultimately for D-Link it comes down to four key industry segments driving our smart home vision. Over the past decade consumers the world over have rapidly embraced mobile telecommunications as connectivity has allowed them to stay more and more in touch with their friends and their colleagues.

The vision that many have for this technology, is to create a smart home that will contain multiple connected devices such as: appliances, control actuators, personal health and home environment sensors, entertainment consoles and displays. Data from these devices can be exchanged easily in support of a range of smart home services. Examples include local and remote home energy management, security monitoring, wellness monitoring and also the sharing of Internet and entertainment content.

D-Link first entered into the smart home market with a range of five products, these consisted of the Home monitor HD, motion sensor, smart plug; music everywhere and our pan tilt and zoom camera, the mydlink Home monitor 360 all work together in unison in order to create a smart home environment.

Looking ahead to our offering in the smart home market it is our recently launched smart home security kit that takes the mydlink smart home to another level. The kit includes the battery motion sensor, the siren with optional battery back up and the connected home hub, providing a combination of Z-wave and Wi-Fi allowing users to create an entry level security system in their home using smart home technology.

D-Link’s 30th Birthday

Birthday

As D-Link’s 30th birthday is soon approaching (23rd June for those who didn’t know) we will be releasing a series of blog posts leading up to this significant date in D-Link’s calendar, documenting the company’s history as well as looking to the future as the company looks to grow even further.

In this blog post we’ll take things right back to the beginning and take a look at the technological advancements that D-Link has made in the last 30 years. Over this period of time the networking market has changed drastically, below are some particular highlights for D-Link:

  • 1996 – Launched 1st Managed Ethernet Switch
  • 2002 – Launched D-Link’s 1st Wireless IP Surveillance Camera
  • 2005 – Patent for D-Link “Zone Defence Security”
  • 2006 – Worlds 1st D-Link Green brand Product
  • 2007 – D-Link becomes the first company in the networking industry to introduce Green Ethernet technology in its Gigabit switches.
  • 2011 – 1st Cloud Camera
  • 2013 – Launch of Baby Camera
  • 2014 – Introduction of series of connected home products

As can be seen from the timeline, D-Link has come from relatively modest beginnings in Taiwan into an exciting global brand offering the latest network solutions.

In 2014 D-Link’s first connected home products were introduced to the market and this has been a key focus of our consumer business ever since. With D-Link’s recently launched Z-Wave range of smart home products coming to the market this year and further smart home products in the pipeline this is certainly an area of growth that D-Link will look to exploit.
