Getting the most out of your Wi-Fi

Getting the most out of your Wi-Fi

There’s a good chance that you’re reading this over a Wi-Fi connection. And if you are, it’s quite likely that from time to time, your Wi-Fi network doesn’t perform as well as you’d like.

Wi-Fi is one of the most important developments in the evolution of the internet—no one wants to be chained to a desktop—but it’s also one of the most frustrating when it isn’t performing well or seamlessly stretching it’s powers into all the corners of your house.

We often think of Wi-Fi networks as virtual, uniform fields that fill our living spaces. In fact, they’re very physical signals that can be blocked or scattered by walls, other electronics, and even people! But it’s hard to know what the issue is. Do you need to upgrade your router – or simply extend your Wi-Fi coverage?

If you’re still using an older 802.11g or 802.11n router —“Wireless G” or “Wireless N,” as they’re commonly known—it’s time to upgrade to something new. One of the best ways to make sure your network is as fast and reliable as possible is to use up-to-date hardware. Switch to an 802.11ac router and you should get faster performance. An 802.11ac router might not give you more range than a 802.11n router, but it will give you stronger performance for 802.11ac devices farther out. A great option is the D-Link DIR-882.

If you’re having trouble getting a strong Wi-Fi signal across your home the best thing to do is to use a mesh solution which is an almost fool proof way to extend your coverage.
In your average Wi-Fi setup, you have a router and a modem. You plug this into the wall where the signal comes in (either ADSL or cable, most likely) and the router spreads the signal as far as it can within your house. Every wall, carpet, door and other obstacle will weaken the signal, which means that some rooms will provide better coverage than others.
This is where mesh networks come in: extra boxes sit in your house, such as the D-Link Covr, and treat the internet in your house like a relay race: picking up the internet signal and taking it deeper into your abode, including places that were impossible to reach before.

If you’re sick to death of poor Wi-Fi coverage, opting for mesh Wi-Fi is the way to go. By taking the signal from your modem or existing router and distributing it around a series of “nodes” or satellite devices, mesh systems eradicate black spots while also maintaining a much higher level of throughput than a single router can maintain. And generally, tri-band mesh systems are faster than dual-band ones.

Remember, a gadget is only as good as its internet connection. Upgrading your router and deploying a mesh solution is super simple, affordable and requires no hand tools.

D-Link’s HUGE Black Friday deals

The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s to mark the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. “Black” refers to stores moving from the “red” to the “black,” back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit.

Black Friday deals in the UK are no longer a new thing. The phenomenon of this long weekend (with the following Cyber Monday playing a big part too) has been a part of the British shopping psyche since 2014, and it’s even forced the traditional retailers to change the way they’re selling.

It’s also meant that Christmas shopping has changed as well, with the last five Black Friday periods being the biggest spending Britain has ever seen, and this year’s black Friday UK deals are very likely to smash the record again – and you’ve only got 10 days to plan with the official day falling on 23 November 2018.

Leave your worries behind this Easter as you take your home on holiday

It may be hard to believe that we are nearly a quarter of the way through the year and we’re already approaching Easter time! Not only does this mean the beginning of Spring, an excuse to eat lots of chocolate, and an opportunity to spend time with family as the kids are off from school, but many of us may also be looking forward to enjoying some time away in the sun. While holidays should be a relaxed affair, they can sometimes cause anxiety due to thoughts such as ‘Did I shut all the windows?’ ‘Is the house secure?’ and ‘What if I left the oven on?’  At D-Link, we appreciate that holidays should strictly be a time for fun, family and refreshment, and thankfully due to our latest innovations in home security technology, we hope that that worries about your home will be the last thing on your mind this Easter.

Our recent research discovered that 59% of respondents that said that they would worry less about what was happening at home while they’re out and about if they could monitor it on their phone. It’s clear to understand why, as the ability to keep an eye on what’s going on would give consumers much greater peace of mind, whether this is to ensure the pets are being properly looked after by the pet-sitter, to check the older children aren’t throwing parties or to just generally be assured that everything is OK in your absence.

D-Link’s two new indoor cameras, the DCS-8000LH Mini HD Wi-Fi Camera, the DCS-8100HD 180 Degree WiFi Camera and the newly launched outdoor camera, the DCS-2670L full HD 180 Outdoor WiFi Camera which is robust enough to withstand dust, rain and snow, make all of this possible as they can work effortlessly with the recently revamped mydlink app.

The cameras provide a simple solution that enable users to monitor both the inside and outside of their homes at all times in 1080p Full HD resolution. Featuring motion and sound detection, they can instantly record any sudden movement or activity, and send video alerts to a user’s phone. They even feature a night-time mode for round-the-clock home monitoring and peace of mind.  You can access, control, view and share content from all of the D-Link cameras in your home on the phone app, which can be controlled, automated and monitored from a personal account – creating your own home cloud, accessible from anywhere.

So don’t worry about going away and enjoy a truly care-free and relaxing holiday this Easter as you remain assured by D-Link that your home is easily viewable, no matter where you are.

Do you suffer from Wi-Fi withdrawals?

If you think that you can’t cope without Wi-Fi, you’re not alone! Recent consumer research conducted by D-Link found that 95% of respondents agreed that they couldn’t bear to stay disconnected from the internet at home for just one week. Our research explored consumer insights into Wi-Fi black spots around the home and consumers’ reliance on a quality Wi-Fi connection. More specifically, we asked consumers what they would be most prepared to sacrifice for a week, from a range of options including Wi-Fi, alcohol, exercise, showering, coffee/tea, holidays and more. The results of the research, interestingly, found that other than heating/air conditioning  – or one of their fingers – good internet Wi-Fi coverage everywhere at home, was the least likely thing that respondents would be willing to give up for a week!

Therefore, it is evident that in today’s digital society many of us are heavily reliant on a good, steady internet connection, whether this is for work, shopping, streaming TV shows, staying connected via social media, gaming, or general internet browsing. However, despite this high demand for a good quality Wi-Fi connection, our research also found that nearly a quarter of respondents across the UK believe they suffer from poor Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi blackspots at home, with respondents experiencing, on average, poor connectivity and Wi-Fi Blackspots at home three times per week, with some of the worst-affected areas in the U.K being Edinburgh and Bristol.

Luckily, D-Link has a solution to ensure that you do not have to deal with this frequent but frustrating problem – the recently launched DIR-878 EXO AC1900 and DIR-882 EXO AC2600 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi Gigabit Routers. Both have been specifically designed to meet the needs of the ever-increasing demand on home routers. The routers effortlessly offer all-encompassing Wi-Fi coverage with the help of Smart Beam technology, enabling users to connect effortlessly from around the house, while the router does the hard work, steering signal to where it is most needed. Couple this with MU-MIMO technology, and the frustrations of Wi-Fi black spots and a consequently a lagging, slow Wi-Fi experience in the home, can be left behind!  Why not see for yourself why the routers make the ideal choice for any household that is heavily reliant on a good quality Wi-Fi connection, by learning more here.

The Alarming Truth About Your Home Security System

With police-recorded crime rate being higher than ever, having increased by 10% across England and Wales in 2017*, including an increase in burglary, it is clear to see why society is more security-conscious than ever before. This increase indicates that typical security systems such as security alarms are not effective solutions to combating the problem.

Recent research by D-Link may give us some insight as to why this may be. Interestingly, the research found that 39% of respondents said that if they heard a security alarm in their local area, their initial assumption would be that it had been set off by mistake, with only one in six saying that their initial assumption would be that it had been set off by unusual activity, suggesting that to many people, a home alarm is part of the daily soundscape of life, and therefore they are not always taken seriously. Despite this, when asked about the safety of their own homes when they are not there, household security is at the forefront of people’s concerns as just under a quarter of respondents regularly worrying about someone to break in. This indicates that further security measures are needed.

DCS-2670L_A1_Image H(Side_Right)

D-Link’s research also found that 42% of respondents agreed that they would worry less about what was happening at home if they could monitor it on their phone. D-Link’s newly launched HD Wi-Fi cameras, the DCS-8000LH Mini HD Wi-Fi Camera, the DCS-8100HD 180 Degree Wi-Fi Camera, and for your outdoor needs; the DCS-2670L Full HD 180° Outdoor Wi-Fi Camera,  are the ideal solution as they make it easy for you to monitor, automate and control your home from anywhere, at anytime from the convenience of your smartphone or tablet via the Mydlinkapp. This enables you to experience HD 720p resolution viewing from your mobile device, along with a number of embedded security features such as motion and sound detection that can send alerts to the users phone as well as trigger video recording, for maximum security.  The cameras can be placed at key points of entry, feature a night time mode for round-the-clock monitoring and have the ability to record and play back video footage for maximum home security.

The cameras make the ideal choice to provide any home-owner with a secure and reliable security system at an affordable price point.
